Ten Years of Do Right
Just in time for the holidays, Do Right commemorates our 10th Anniversary with a fantastic deal on our 10 Ans: Ten Years of Do Right! compilation. For just $10, you’ll get 22 soul, funk, jazz, Afrobeat, house and hiphop joints -- personally selected by label boss John Kong from Do Right’s 10-year archive -- by great artists like Souljazz Orchestra, Elizabeth Shepherd, Maylee Todd, Abdominal, Lee Fields, Brassroots and many more. “These selections represent the the definitive moments in Do Right history,” says John. “They’re the singles that inspired me to release the albums, the remixes that got an instant reaction from the crowds in the clubs, and the ones that gave me a special feeling of pride when I heard them on the radio. This compilation is the soundtrack of Do Right Music so far, and it keeps on evolving. I feel very fortunate and honoured to have worked with all of these great artists, past and present, whose musical contributions have put Do Right on the worldwide map.”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Do Right Music is proud to present an extra-special Summer Session, featuring a rare performance from one-of-kind Motown tribute band The Big Sound. This spectacular party goes off Friday August 19th, in the vintage splendour of The Great Hall.
If you've been to one of The Big Sound’s explosive live sessions, you'll know they are the real deal. Sparing no expense, The Big Sound recreates the glory years of Motown as authentically as possible, to bring Toronto the biggest celebration of Motown it has ever seen. This jaw-dropping 20-piece band features exciting local talents including Maylee Todd, Tanika Charles, Rodd Skimmons, Lady Shabazz, and more. The Big Sound performs a spectacular selection of all Motown hits from The Jackson 5, The Supremes, Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson, Marvin Gaye, and all of the artists who define this primordial party sound.
Chris Sandes, The Big Sound co-founder and promoter of Loving In The Name Of, says: “I decided it was time for this city to grow up and get a proper Motown night for the greater good. I scraped and begged and used all my powers of persuasion to get as many talented people as possible from the urban, indie rock, and jazz scenes to collaborate and bring all their talents to the night. The result is The Big Sound, and it’s banging. In its own way I think The Big Sound is one of the only collabs of the indie and urban scenes or even of free jazz & classical cats. It’s a testament to how much people love Motown. You would never know that all the folks the stage ever did anything else!”
Joining The Big Sound will be Do Right's own Maylee Todd, fresh from her successful European tour -- that included opening for Janelle Monae at c/o pop in Cologne, Germany; and performing as part of 2-days Canadian Blast Canada Day extravaganza in London UK with Chilly Gonzales, The Hidden Cameras, Woodpigeon, Devon Sproule, Mantler, and more. Maylee and her band Pegwee Power will warm up the audience with her eclectic blend of funk, soul and rock; expect to hear a selection of new songs from her upcoming album along with favourites from her 2010 debut "Choose Your Own Adventure".
Behind the decks will be DJ John Kong and a who’s who of Toronto party-rockers including Nasty Nav, Paul E. Lopes, and Circle Research -- spinning a selection of Funk, Soul, Disco, Hip Hop and everything in between.
If you don't know what we are about read on:
The Happiness Project
is a JUNO-award winning album composed and produced by Charles Spearin of the Toronto-based bands Broken Social Scene and Do Make Say Think on the Arts and Crafts label. Interested in learning about people's definition of 'happiness', Charles interviewed his Annex neighbours and then took their spoken words and wrote music to accompany their responses. The resulting compositions are moving, insightful, and inspirational.
The Happiness Project: In the House
is a collaborative and interactive installation-based exhibition curated by Artist Bloc and built around artists' interpretations of Spearin's compositions and their own definition of 'happiness'.
The exhibition will open on October 1st, 2011 as part of Scotiabank‘s Nuit Blanche and will run until October 15th, 2011.
TEDxTORONTO
Friday, July 8th 2011
Special DJ set by: CIRCLE RESEARCH - 9pm
Announcing our Third Salon – The Immigrant
“Isn’t everyone a part of everyone else?”
~ Budd Schulberg
The Theme:
Of the 2.5 million residents who make up the City of Toronto, half were born outside of Canada. With our third Salon, The Immigrant, we explore how the themes of identity, integration, assimilation, inclusion and exclusion manifest themselves in one of the most multi-racial, multi-cultural cities in the world.
The Details:
Friday, July 8th at 7PM – 11pm
Open Market at the Scadding Court Community Centre
707 Dundas Street West (Bathurst and Dundas)
The Location:
The Immigrant will be held at one of the most innovative new community spaces in Toronto, the Live Open Market at the Scadding Court Community Centre. Just opened as of June 17th, this colourful “pop up” market is part of an effort to revitalize and redefine the area, providing small, local vendors with commercial space and breathing new life into the neighbourhood.
Your Host – Ty Harper:
As a Toronto radio producer and co-host of OTA Live!, Canada’s first urban variety show, Ty is no stranger to navigating discussion and debate. Ty was born in Toronto & raised till his mid-teens in Trinidad.
Opening Words – Councilor Adam Vaughan:
Our welcome and opening words will be delivered by Councilor Adam Vaughan of Ward 20, Trinity-Spadina. For about 20 years, Vaughan worked as a political journalist and activist, most recently as the Political Specialist at Citytv/CP24.
Speaker – Fabio Crespin:
Born and raised in Sao Paulo Brazil, Fabio moved with his wife and son to Toronto in 2008. Moving to Canada was an ideological decision – he was motivated to be part of a more balanced and equal society. He is passionate about transforming society for the better. Fabio will speak about his new immigrant story.
Speaker – Leonardo Zuniga:
Since arriving in Canada in 2004, Leonardo (Leo) has been advocating for the rights of marginalized and oppressed young people. He also leads workshops around anti-oppression and anti-homophobia issues facing LGBT refugees and has recently joined the “Exploring Intersectionality” Project. Leo will also speak about his new immigrant story.
Speaker – Teresa Toten:
Teresa is a speaker and award-winning author of eight books. She was born in Yugoslavia, but left for Canada that same day. Teresa developed her broad taste in reading and writing because of her non-English speaking mother’s habit of filling shopping bags full of books from wildly disparate sections of the library. Twice nominated for the Governor General’s Literary Award, Teresa’s acclaimed anthology Piece by Piece: Stories About Fitting into Canada was highlighted “as an important collection of stories” by CBC radio.
Keynote Speaker – Avvy Go
Avvy (LL.B. & LL.M.) is the Clinic Director of the Metro Toronto Chinese & Southeast Asian Legal Clinic. Avvy received the 2002 President’s Award of the Women’s Law Association of Ontario and the 2008 City of Toronto’s William P. Hubbard Award for Race Relations. She also co-founded the Colour of Poverty Campaign in 2007. Avvy will discuss this campaign and issues of race, poverty and identity.
-Live JR Inside Out Project photo studio featuring special guest photographers
